RE

At Harlands Primary School, Religious Education plays an important role in helping children develop respect, understanding and appreciation of the diverse world in which they live. As a community school, we welcome and celebrate the rich variety of backgrounds, cultures, beliefs and experiences represented within our school and wider community.

We use the Kapow Primary Religious Education Scheme of Work to provide a broad, balanced and progressive RE curriculum that meets the requirements of the West Sussex Agreed Syllabus. Through engaging lessons, children develop knowledge and understanding of a range of religions, worldviews and beliefs, while also exploring their own values, identity and place in the world.

Our RE curriculum encourages children to ask thoughtful questions, think critically, reflect on different perspectives and engage in respectful discussion. Pupils learn about major world religions and non-religious worldviews, exploring how beliefs influence people's lives, communities and traditions.

Through RE, children develop:

  • Respect for different faiths, beliefs and cultures

  • Curiosity about the diverse world around them

  • Empathy, tolerance and understanding of others

  • Skills of reflection, discussion and critical thinking

  • An appreciation of their own beliefs, values and experiences

Our curriculum supports our school values of Responsibility, Optimism, Confidence, Kindness, Critical Thinking, Tolerance and Respect, helping children become thoughtful, informed and respectful members of society.

At Harlands, we believe RE helps children understand both the similarities and differences that make our communities unique, preparing them to live successfully and respectfully in modern Britain and an increasingly diverse world.
