CurriculumMission I'mPossible
Learning Without Limits
At Harlands Primary School, Mission I’mPossible is much more than a curriculum initiative.
It is a reflection of who we are, what we believe and how we want every child to experience learning. Developed in response to our commitment to building independent, resilient and curious learners, Mission I’mPossible gives children the opportunity to take ownership of their learning, develop their interests and challenge themselves in meaningful ways.
Bringing Our Vision to Life
Our school vision centres on Everyone Achieves, The Whole Child and Building Curiosity. Mission I’mPossible provides a practical and inspiring way for this vision to be seen in every classroom. Through carefully planned enquiries, children are encouraged to ask questions, investigate ideas, think critically and apply their learning in creative ways across the curriculum.
Rather than simply being told what to learn, pupils are invited to become active participants in their education. They research, plan, create, review and improve their work, developing the confidence and self-belief needed to become successful lifelong learners.
Curiosity, Enquiry and Discovery
Every Mission begins with a big question, designed to spark curiosity and encourage deeper thinking. Children explore topics through enquiry-based learning, drawing together knowledge and skills from different curriculum areas to answer authentic questions and solve meaningful challenges.
This approach encourages children to:
-
Ask thoughtful questions.
-
Research and investigate independently.
-
Make connections across subjects.
-
Reflect on and improve their work.
-
Develop resilience when faced with challenges.
-
The result is learning that is engaging, memorable and purposeful.
Low Threshold, High Ceiling
At Harlands, we believe that every child should experience challenge and success. Mission I’mPossible is designed around a low threshold, high ceiling model, ensuring that all learners can access learning while also providing opportunities for depth, complexity and sustained challenge.
Children are supported to select tasks and levels of challenge that are appropriate for them, with opportunities to extend their thinking through planning, research, drafting, reviewing and refining their work. This means every child can begin learning confidently while having the opportunity to achieve more ambitious outcomes.
Promoting Pupil Agency and Independence
One of the key aims of Mission I’mPossible is to develop pupil agency, empowering children to take increasing responsibility for their learning. Children make choices, set goals, evaluate their progress and work collaboratively with teachers through regular coaching conversations.
By giving children greater ownership, we help them become:
-
Independent learners.
-
Reflective thinkers.
-
Effective problem-solvers.
-
Confident communicators.
-
Resilient individuals.
Over time, pupils develop the skills and mindset needed to thrive both in school and beyond.
Inclusive by Design
Mission I’mPossible reflects our commitment to inclusion and equity. We recognise that children learn in different ways, develop at different rates and have different strengths, interests and talents. Our Missions provide multiple pathways for success, allowing children to demonstrate their learning through a variety of creative, practical, written and investigative approaches.
Because children can make choices about how they engage with learning, Mission I’mPossible celebrates individuality while ensuring that every learner feels valued, supported and capable of success. It creates an environment where differences are celebrated and mistakes are viewed as opportunities for growth.
Reflecting Our Culture and Ethos
Mission I’mPossible is deeply rooted in the Harlands culture. It embodies our commitment to being a school where children are curious, resilient, kind and confident learners. It promotes the values of responsibility, optimism, confidence, kindness, tolerance, critical thinking and respect, while supporting our school rules of being
Ready, Respectful and Safe
The approach creates classrooms that are supportive, inspiring and safe places to take risks, try new ideas and grow as learners. Children learn that success comes through perseverance, reflection and a willingness to challenge themselves.
Learning for Life
Mission I’mPossible helps children develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed for the future. Through enquiry, creativity, collaboration, self-reflection and independent learning, pupils leave Harlands as confident young people with a love of learning and the curiosity to explore the world around them.
At Harlands, we believe that every child is capable of achieving great things. Mission I’mPossible helps them discover exactly that
