Supporting Every Learner

English as an Additional Language

At Harlands Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that children who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL) are fully included in all aspects of school life and are able to achieve their full potential. We believe that language should never be a barrier to learning, participation or success.

Our moral purpose is to strive for excellence in everything we do, valuing everyone and the world around us. Through our broad and balanced curriculum, rich learning experiences and supportive learning environment, we help every child develop confidence, a strong sense of self and a love of learning.

Children joining Harlands with EAL are supported to settle into school, develop their confidence in English and take an active role in classroom learning. A designated EAL Coordinator works closely with class teachers and the Inclusion Team to identify individual needs and provide appropriate support. Early support focuses on developing conversational English before building the language skills needed to access the full curriculum.

Our inclusive approach encourages children to learn alongside their peers through high-quality classroom teaching and carefully planned interventions. This ensures they continue to develop language skills through both formal learning and everyday social interactions.

We achieve this by:

  • Providing a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum.

  • Adapting teaching to meet individual needs.

  • Promoting communication, thinking and life skills.

  • Working closely with parents, carers and the wider community.

  • Celebrating the diversity, talents and achievements of all children.

  • Providing high-quality pastoral care and safeguarding support.

  • Monitoring progress and reviewing provision to ensure every child can succeed.

At Harlands, our values of respect, inclusion and belonging underpin everything we do, helping all children feel safe, happy, valued and ready to thrive.
